Black Hat: Security Unwrapped

In the myriad world of efficiency, convenience and keeping up with fast-paced emerging trends, it’s the new norm to expect these days; but when it comes to the dynamic realms of information security, there’s a lot to say when protecting our digital assets. Having elapsed a week since Superuser OÜ’s participation at Black Hat USA, we have taken the time to reflect on some of the discussions made at the conference while putting the lego blocks together on themes that were predominately made.

One such subject matter injected into cyber security that’s been making waves recently is Generative AI, and we’re talking ‘everywhere’. Now, not only has this event come at a no better time when it comes to the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) to encompass pretty much every business and introduced into multiple markets - automation, integrations, software updates… network attacks! To delve deeper, keep reading as we continue to magnify the spotlight on Generative AI in Cyber Security and what it means for consumers, product development and industry roles.

Chat GPT and Generative AI Security Risks

Going beyond the surface, we’ve witnessed the use of AI and it’s surge in popularity following the launch of ChatGPT and similar chatbots. For instance when the accessibility of ChatGPT exploded and became widely used, the overall consensus were amazed and incredibly awestruck. The capabilities to generate natural language processing tasks and accurate conversational responses were compelling (most of the time, as some would say without the right prompts it’s examples were subpar).

From drafting resumes, the fierce debate of that one guy who co-created a children’s book and sold it on Amazon - and let’s not forget the drama ensued for completing college essays. Remarkably, it wasn’t long after a considerable amount of hype, users began to craft malicious methods behind the design. Let’s just say the deployment of immediate threat and Security Risks such as phishing campaigns became evidently problematic when it came to cyber criminals leveraging on the chat bot’s capabilities.

Enhanced Security on Open AI ChatGPT

From my experience attending Black Hat (which coincided with moments of existential contemplation), uncovering the topic of Generative AI and it’s domino effects gave me an incredible sense of impending doom, yet simultaneously, the feeling of exhilarating possibilities. At this point wondering about the business hall during said aforementioned crises; a guy with a ’BOT-BUSTER’ shirt approached us and his first words were, “Do you use CHATGPT?”, so of course we had to join the conversion about this perplexing topic.

As we sat down with Head of Research Antoine Vastel at Datadome who is literally, “fighting bots every single day…”, he articulated the perspective of leveraging ChatGPT and how we can ensure the security of our content, data and web traffic through scraping protection measures. On the security point of view, the use of techniques that is utilized by OpenAI can easily encompass and assess private sensitive data behind the scenes. Digging into the subject, the security risks of Open AI ChatGPT Plugins has been talks of concern for data leaks and breaches to misusing personal information.

Navigating The Future of Cyber Security

Despite the enticing and game-changing advancements of Generative AI, it really is balancing the risk and reward for users and poses the thought of “who can do it better?” with a poker face. Whether you use it for research, productivity or as a co-pilot, we are only just scratching the surface of what the future of Cyber Security will develop into that will reduce it’s invasive techniques and what we can do now to keep ourselves safe. Even though this topic has been the talk of the town, attending this year’s Black Hat has ended our experience with a positive note with the possibilities of cyber security services we can look forward to. More importantly, looking towards the creativity of applications and what’s coming up next.
